Crypto Slang You NEED to Know ASAP
Slang is a key part of being in the crypto community. But there are so many that it can be hard to keep track of what people are talking about. This article will outline some of the most common crypto slang.
AFI
AFI means “all f**king in”. This is commonly referred to when buying, selling, or trading cryptocurrency.
Example: Person one: Did you see BTC is up… again?!?
Person Two: Oh man I am AFI! ***runs to invest more in BTC.
Altcoin
The first cryptocurrency is Bitcoin. Altcoin refers to any crypto that isn’t bitcoin.
An example of an altcoin would be dogecoin.
All-Time High
This is used when a token or coin reaches the highest point in the token or coin’s history.
Example: Bro, have you checked today? Bitcoin has hit an all-time high!
Bag Holder
This is someone who holds their coins or tokens for a long time because they think their money is worth more than it actually is.
Example: Eric is still holding on to that currency, he’s such a bagholder.
Bitshaming
Bitshaming is when someone makes fun of someone who invested in bitcoin (usually for a long period of time) and has not become rich yet. Think of it like kink-shaming but for cryptocurrencies.
Example: “OMG Karen, stop bitshaming me. My ROI has not hit yet.”
BTFD
BTFD means “buy the f**king dip”. This is a way to encourage people to buy when the price is low- aka then the market dips.
Example: The market is down, BTFD.
Cope
Cope is the opposite of FOMO. This is used when someone is coping because they missed out on an opportunity such as not buying at the dip.
Example: “I didn’t buy at the BTC dip, let me cope.”
Diamond Hands
Diamond hands are when a trader or investor refuses to sell no matter what.
Example: “Did you hear Dan bought bitcoin back in the day?”
“Yea, and he refuses to sell. Him and his diamond hands.”
DYOR
DYOR means “do your own research”. This is meant to encourage people to research for themselves and come to their own conclusions on the markets. This is a common response in the oral winstrol space when people ask for advice on buying, selling, or trading.
Example: You want to know how much to invest in Ethereum? You need to DYOR, it’s not for everyone.
Flipping
Flipping is when Bitcoin has a lower market value than Ethereum.
Example: I cannot believe the flipping that is happening. ETH is almost 5% higher than BTC right now.
FOMO
FOMO stands for the fear of missing out. In the crypto world, this is what people say when they are afraid to miss out on their next big investment.
Example: I didn’t buy at the dip and I’m having so much FOMO right now.
Forking
Forking is used to describe when a blockchain breaks into two different parts making it forked.
Example: Think of forking as a fork in the road, you either go right or left.
FUD
FUD stands for “fear, uncertainty, and doubt”. It’s used when people want to spread false information about crypto.
Example: “You use crypto? The media says only criminals use those.”
“Bethany, that is so FUD.”
Hyperbitcoinization
This can also be called H-Theory. Essentially it’s a theory that one day bitcoin will become the world’s currency and replace all the other world currencies.
Example: Person one: You should really hop into bitcoin now. It will replace all and become the sole currency. Do it before it’s too late!!
Person two: Sorry for them, he’s hyperbitcoinizating again.
IYKYK
This slang term stands for “if you know you know.” Meaning, that you kind of have to be in it in order to understand what they are saying.
Example: Remember when Elon entered the Doge space? IYKYK.
No Coiner
This slang term is used for someone who does not hold cryptocurrency.
Example: Don’t ask them for BTC they are a no coiner.
Maxi
A maxi, short for maximalist, is someone will an extreme view of something and is very stubborn on their view.
Example: A bitcoin maximalist may be hyperbitcoinizating all the time. They tend to be very passionate about their standpoint that BTC will replace all and are stubborn about changing their mind.

Someone who gets super bullish about a project or piece of news. Then they go on to preach overzealously about pricing predictions.
Example: Bro, can you chill? ETH is not going to make it there, you’re being a total moonboy right now.
OG
OG means “original gangster”. These are the people who were here early and earned respect.
Example: Satoshi Nakamoto is the OG of Bitcoin.
Rekt
Rekt means “wrecked”. Typically you hear this when you have bad luck or the market dips.
Example: “Omg your dogecoin dipped? Get Rekttttttt.”
Rugged
Rugged essencial is used to mean scam.
Example: Don’t invest in that if you don’t want to be rugged.
Return On Investment (ROI)
According to Investopedia, ROI is a measurement to see the efficiency or profitability of an investment. The higher the ROI, the better.
Example: Emily, I can’t believe your portfolio grew its ROI by 10%. That’s so impressive!
Sats
Sats is slang for the shortest number of BTC you can buy (.00000001). This is an abbreviation for Satoshi the investor of Bitcoin.
Example: Can you please send me some sats to get started?
Shilling
Shilling is when people promote their own preferred project. Meaning their advice on the project would be very biased.
Example: “Guys you have to buy into this new project, it’s lit”
“Brian is shilling again.”
SZN
Szn is an acronym for season meaning a bull or a bear one.
Example: Man, I can’t believe we are in a bear szn right now, everything’s down.
Ticker Symbols
This isn’t so much slang as it is important to understand crypto as a whole. These are trading symbols unique to every cryptocurrency on the market.
Example: BTC is the ticker symbol for Bitcoin. DOGE is the ticker symbol for dogecoin.
Whale
A whale is what we call large investors that influence the market. They have a lot of cryptocurrency investments across a variety of coins.
Example: Ok Google, is Elon Musk a Dogecoin Whale?
WGMI/WAGMI
This means “we’re going to make it” or “we are going to make it”. This is used in online trading spaces to show major good news related to their investments.
Example: Whoa, BTC looks like it’s about to reach an all-time high, WGMI!
